چکیده

In addition to its numerous technological applications amorphous silica (a-SiO2) is also well suited to the creation and study of exotic atoms such as positronium (Ps) and muonium. In particular, a dense Ps gas may be created by implanting an intense positron pulse into a porous a-SiO2 sample. However, such positron pulses can constitute a significant dose of radiation, which may damage the sample. We have observed a reduction in the amount of Ps formed in a thin film of porous a-SiO2 following irradiation by intense positron pulses, indicating the creation of paramagnetic centers. The data show that the primary effect of the irradiation is the inhibition of Ps formation, with no significant change in the subsequent Ps lifetime, from which we deduce that damage centers are created primarily in the bulk material and not on the internal surfaces of the pores, where they would be accessible to the long-lived Ps. We find that the damage is reversible, and that the system may be returned to its original state by heating to 700 K. The implications of these results for experiments with dense Ps in porous materials are discussed. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 78.66.Jg; 78.40.Fy; 78.47. p; 78.70.Bj

Intense THz pulses cause H2AX phosphorylation and activate DNA damage response in human skin tissue

Recent emergence and growing use of terahertz (THz) radiation for medical imaging and public security screening raise questions on reasonable levels of exposure and health consequences of this form of electromagnetic radiation. In particular, picosecond-duration THz pulses have shown promise for novel diagnostic imaging techniques. However, the effects of THz pulses on human cells and tissues t...

Damage to extreme-ultraviolet Sc/Si multilayer mirrors exposed to intense 46.9-nm laser pulses.

The damage threshold and damage mechanism of extreme-ultraviolet Sc/Si multilayer mirror coatings are investigated with focused nanosecond pulses at 46.9-nm radiation from a compact capillary-discharge laser. Damage threshold fluences of approximately 0.08 J/cm2 are measured for coatings deposited on both borosilicate glass and Si substrates. The use of scanning and transmission electron micros...

Zone Plates for Hard X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers

Hard x-ray free-electron lasers are novel sources of coherent x-rays with unprecedented brightness and very short pulses. The radiation from these sources enables a wide range of new experiments that were not possible with previous x-ray sources. Many of these experiments require the possibility to focus the intense x-ray beam onto small samples. This Thesis investigates the possibility to use ...

Quantitation of genome damage and transcriptional profile of DNA damage response genes in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells exposed in vitro to low doses of neutron radiation

Background: Humans are exposed to ionizing radiation from different sources that include natural, occupational, medical, accidental exposures. Evaluation of the effect of low level of neutron exposure to human cells in vitro has important implications to human health. Attempts were made to measure genome damage, transcriptional profile of DNA damage response and repair genes in peripheral blood...

0 6 Nonlinear propagation of broadband intense electromagnetic waves in an electron – positron plasma

A kinetic equation describing the nonlinear evolution of intense electromagnetic pulses in electron–positron (e-p) plasmas is presented. The modulational instability is analyzed for a relativistically intense partially coherent pulse, and it is found that the modulational instability is inhibited by the spectral pulse broadening. A numerical study for the one-dimensional kinetic photon equation...
